Nazareth Catholic College Yr 11 into 12 Seminar Day Research Project- Designing a Research Process Conducting Ethical Research

Ethical Research All research conducted must be – Manageable (time, money, etc) Ethical Safe Ethical Research – Guidelines for Students – SACE Board Policy

Research Process Once you have identified your Research Topic, you need to design a Research Process – a method for doing your research. No two Research Topics will have the same Research Process.

Research Process Start by breaking your Research Topic into manageable sections or small questions to be answered. You may have to repeat this several times through the course of your RP – new information will lead you to continually revise your Research Topic.

Research Process- Example How does a Near Death Experience alter a person’s life afterwards? What is a NDE? What form do NDE’s take? Who experiences NDE’s? What impact does an NDE have on a person’s life after the event?

Research Process - Example What is a NDE? Books Journals (especially Psychology and Medical journals) Search the Internet

Research Process - Example What form do NDE’s take? Books Journals (especially Psychology and Medical journals) Search the Internet Survey with NDE survivors

Research Process - Example Who experiences NDE’s? Books Journals (especially Psychology and Medical journals) Search the Internet Survey with NDE survivors

Research Process - Example What impact does an NDE have on a person’s life after the event? Books Journals (especially Psychology and Medical journals) Search the Internet Interview with survivors Survey

Example – What issues arise? What is a NDE? I plan to research this by reading some books especially ‘Life after Light’ by Dr Raymond Moody and ‘Tricks of the Brain’ by W Penfield. I also plan to do some internet searches and look at firstly university websites and also medical sites as well as sites by people who have experienced NDE’s.

Example-What issues arise? What form do NDE’s take? I will research this also by looking at secondary sources – books and websites, but also by going on the Near Death Experience Survivors (NDES) website and asking if members there will do a survey that I have prepared. I might put the survey on my Facebook page as well.

Example- What issues arise? Who experiences NDE’s? I am interested to know if it is just religious people who experience NDE;s or if non-religious people do as well. I am also eager to know if non-christians experience NDE’s. My cousin told me about a spiritualist church made up of people who believe that they can talk to deceased people. I am going to attend one of their services and ask them to ask the spirits what it’s like to die and see if the experiences match up.

Example – What issues arise? What impact does an NDE have on a person’s life after the event? I am going to interview my 12 year old next door neighbour about the NDE that she had after a bad car accident last year and how it has changed her life. I am also going to go up to Queensland in June because there is going to be a NDE conference held there specifically about life after an NDE. I should get a lot of good information from that. I am also going to the home of a man called Tom who kindly invited me to his house to interview him after seeing my request on the NDES website. He set me a text (I posted my mobile number on the site) with his address in Norwood and said that I could come on a Thursday between 10am and lunchtime.
