A BIT ABOUT HIM Born in 1817 at Concord, Massachusetts Died in 1862 at Concord, Massachusetts Died of Tuberculosis Attended Harvard with monetary help from older brother, John During Progressive Era praised the beauty and majesty of American landscape He was the most notable literary figure of the early conservation movement Worked for several years as a surveyor and made pencils Wrote first book ‘Walden’ in self-made cabin at Walden pond Was imprisoned briefly for not paying his poll tax His last words were said to be ‘Moose’ and ‘Indian’

INTERESTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS Reform and the Reformers really shows why he was interested in reform He was frustrated with the amount of reformers: prohibitionists, utopian communists, free love advocates, religious revivalists He feels like reformers are working to hide their need for self-reform by being overly philanthropic His book Walden was about living close to nature and it is one of his most well known works Civil Disobedience was his most well known essay, he wrote it after his stay in jail Civil Disobedience has inspired many leaders of protest movements around the world such as Martin Luther King Jr and Ghandi A Plea for Captain John Brown was written when Thoreau took a stand for a radical abolitionist who led an uprising against slavery in Virginia Thoreau's studies of nature were equally radical in their own way, earning him the moniker of "father of environmentalism”
