The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA 90638(714) Optical Infrastructure for Science and Education Jim Dolgonas President and CEO, CENIC

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC  Non-profit, formed in 1997  18-member board composed of our members  Serves 13 research universities, 30 4-year colleges and universities, year colleges and all K-12 (8,000+ grammar and high schools) in CA, as well as universities in Arizona and Nevada  Beginning to share fiber infrastructure with other segments- including private sector

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Policy Framework  CENIC received some seed funding (from the NSF) upon start up in 1997 but receives very little government funding, none for on going operations  Members pay fixed yearly fees  Not usage-based pricing, which would discourage use and therefore innovation  Some optional services priced separately, eg., video, dedicated capacity  Partner with private sector where feasible

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC CalREN  3,000 route miles of backbone fiber  400+ routers  80+ switches  50+ optical components  300+ high-speed circuits from telcos

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC-Multiple Networks

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Requirements/Characteristics  Ability to support high bandwidth  10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, 100 Gb/s  Ability to support short-term uses  Ability to reconfigure network to specific projects and demonstrations  Ability to support dedicated circuits for researchers/projects  Ability to support very high availability needs for teaching

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC Technical Solution

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC Technical Solution to Requirements/Characteristics  Owned-fiber backbone supplemented with fiber to each research university  Diverse fiber/circuits to support network resiliency in case of hardware failure or fiber cuts  Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) to support multiple circuits over single pairs of fiber (permits sharing of infrastructure costs with non research and education)

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) CENIC Technical Solution (continued)  Layer 2 (Ethernet) for those research projects not requiring dedicated Layer 1 bandwidth, but unable to withstand overhead of routed (Layer 3) network  Multiple Layer 3 networks  Quality of service (QoS) where needed

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Use Examples  CENIC Innovations in Networking Award Winners for 2011:  Demonstration  Tele-Immersion for Physicians  Virtual Computing Lab Initiative  eTranscript California  Bleeding-edge research, high-performance research, and educational applications

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Use Examples:  An international organization devoted to using advanced networks for high-quality digital media  October 13, 2010 demonstration the result of 9-month effort involving 50+ participants from 7 CineGrid member orgs, 5 networks including CalREN  4K telepresence virtual conference room; remote streaming 4k/2k/3D video; live digital color grading; collaborative audio mixing; multi-panel display walls for collaborative multimedia

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Use Examples: Tele-Immersion  Enables medical professionals to collaborate seamlessly  Physicians can interact with one another and with their data in real-time  Will unite the Tele-Immersion Lab at UC Berkeley with the Institute for Data Analysis and Visualization (IDAV) at UC Davis  Components currently under development:  Tele-immersion infrastructure,  real-time video capturing systems  algorithms needed to capture, visualize, and transmit data

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Use Examples: Virtual Computing Lab  Pilot program at the Northridge and East Bay campuses of the California State University  Allows students to access the software applications demanded by their coursework from campus, home, or anywhere they have a browser and Internet connectivity, 24/7/365  Significant cost savings and performance increases:  Expensive software need only be bought once  Lab is available to users in many locations, very scalable  Older equipment can be used to access the Lab

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) Use Examples: eTranscript California  Secure, streamlined electronic transcript exchange for 53 post- secondary institutions in California  2-year Community Colleges  4-year Cal State University  Many private/independent colleges  Translating into national standards, tracking, combining transcripts, interfacing with high schools, and studies on student success.  Transcript-related costs for eTranscript California member colleges will drop from an average of $7 to less than 50 cents per transcript

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) External/International Connectivity  Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland/France  CENIC members participate through CalREN  CENIC participants include:  Caltech, Cal Poly SLO  Lawrence Berkeley Lab, Stanford Linear Accelerator  UC Davis, LA, Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Irvine, Santa Cruz

CENIC Valley View Ave. La Mirada, CA (714) External/International Connectivity OptIPuter – OptIPortal - OptIPlanet UCSD StarCave KAUST NexCave CICESE, Mexico OzIPortal, Australia UC Davis Genome Center UWash OptIPortal Dedicated, high-capacity circuits link research teams in California to the OptIPuter/OptIPortal locations worldwide
