5.6.2 – Solving Quadratics with Square Roots

Yesterday, we looked at the properties of square roots 1) Multiplication Property 2) Division Property 3) Simplifying square roots (pull out perfect roots)

Using Square Roots In some cases, we may use square roots to solve quadratics Must be a special case for us to use said method When can we use square roots? ax 2 – c = 0 (only for today)

Solving the Square Root Problem To solve the square root problem, all we will need to do is isolate the x 2 term, then take the square root of both sides Example. x 2 = 9 How would you “undo” the squared portion?

Example. Solve x 2 = 200 Example. Solve 2x 2 = 50

Example. Solve the quadratic x 2 – 18 = 0 How would you isolate the x 2 portion?

Example. Solve the quadratic 3x 2 – 60 = 0

Example. Solve the quadratic 2(x – 4) 2 = 10

Complete the following 4 problems together. You have 8 minutes. 1) x 2 = 49 2) 3x 2 – 1 = 14 3) 3x = 14 4) 2(x – 5) 2 = 12
