NC ECHO Statewide digitization collaborative housed in the State Library of North Carolina - Goal is to promote the use of digital technologies to broaden and enhance access to North Carolina’s cultural heritage - LSTA-funded grant program for digitization projects throughout the state Heritage Partners Grant Program –LSTA-funded grant program focusing on Library-Museum Collaboration Grant Program

Timeline – 3 Year Grant 2004-present Participants –Joyner Library, East Carolina University Teaching Resources Center Center for Digital Projects –Country Doctor Museum (Bailey, NC) –Historic Hope Plantation (Windsor, NC) –Tobacco Farm Life Museum (Kenly, NC) –ECU College of Education Grant History

Key Components ENCDL Key Components: –60,000+ pages of TEI-encoded and double- keyed text of Eastern NC History and Fiction –300 artifacts – zoomable images and narrated streaming video –Classroom Resources including over 100 lesson plans, activities and reading levels for texts

Process Scanned 60,000+ pages in the Center for Digital Projects using Zeutschel 10000A1 Outsourced TEI-encoding to ApexCoVantage Outsourced video production to on- campus Center for Health Sciences Communication Partnered with College of Education to conduct focus groups Teaching Resources Center staff & GA designed and conducted workshops

Museum Partners Dedicated curator and collections policy Ability to provide artifact descriptions and video scripts Collection Management System - all museums used Past Perfect, but fields utilized were different Museum partners participated in teacher workshops and worked with teachers to select artifacts

Prepare for staff changes. No Homework for Teachers--Remember- -they just give it! Require recommendations for workshop participants. Screen participants in order to include all areas of the curriculum. Lessons Learned

Museums aren’t the same - standards vary Museums often have very small staff Outsourcing can often save time and money BUT competing demands many change your timetable Successful digital projects can help create digital programs Lesson Learned
