© GAL Education 2015 HOW TO USE THIS INTERACTIVE PUBLICATION (1) Of course, you can use this publication as a real book – read it from the slides, or print it out as it is. However, the best use will be to use the interactive elements, and the navigation bars. Most pages have hyperlinks which will take you further into a concept, either with an explanation, or a tool. The navigation bars will prevent you from getting lost and suggest the best route for you to take. (Use the keyboard or mouse to take you to the NEXT or PREVIOUS slide, although this may not necessarily the best slide to go to next.) © GAL Education 2015 HOW TO USE THIS INTERACTIVE PUBLICATION (2) The publication and navigation bars guide you through Strategic School Action Planning, and suggests a file organisation you might want to use. The accompanying WORD document supplies pro forma for the file itself. NAVIGATION:PREVIOUSCHAPTER HEADINGHOMENEXT

© GAL Education 2015 INTRODUCTION: DEFINITION OF STRATEGIC PLANNING (1) School improvement is a continuous and effective process of evaluation and action to ensure that all children are achieving to their full potential. It minimises the risk of so called “coasting” schools, and supports weaker schools in their development. Critical factors in school improvement include:  The quality and accuracy of school self evaluation systems  The appropriateness of chosen priorities – goals and strategies  The effectiveness of planned strategies  The involvement of strategic partners and stakeholders  The accuracy and effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation procedures  The available resources NAVIGATION:PREVIOUSCHAPTER HEADINGHOMENEXT

© GAL Education 2015 INTRODUCTION: DEFINITION OF STRATEGIC PLANNING (2) The purposes of school strategic planning include:  To ensure the highest achievement for all pupils and the best quality education  To provide a mechanism for the school to raise standards  To develop and begin to realise the school’s longer term aims and vision  To co ordinate short and longer term planning  To provide an agreed focus for staff and governors  To establish a channel of communication for all  To give a framework for monitoring, evaluation and review  To identify the best use of school resources, including staffing NAVIGATION:PREVIOUSCHAPTER HEADINGHOMENEXT

© GAL Education 2015 INTRODUCTION: DEFINITION OF STRATEGIC PLANNING (3) The guiding principles of strategic planning:  The leadership of the school has a vision for change  All staff have ownership and appropriate accountability  Children and parents – and all stakeholders – have an involvement  All decisions and priorities have a clear rationale and purpose To begin at the end …  The Strategic Planning File gives a rationale for self evaluation  It includes all elements of improvement and development  It leaves nothing to chance  It is flexible and dynamic  It leads to real school improvement NAVIGATION:PREVIOUSCHAPTER HEADINGHOMENEXT

© GAL Education 2015 AUDIT OF CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN Are our plans easy to follow and implement? BEST PRACTICE: Plans identify strategies and specific success criteria. They have interim milestones attached to specific tasks. They indicate the lead person responsible. They include a logical sequence of events, reasonable and attainable timelines, and resource implications. Does our Strategic Plan help us to see the direct relationship between the needs for improvement, the goals we have set, the strategies which we are using, and our expected outcomes? Current school practice: NAVIGATION:PREVIOUSCHAPTER HEADINGHOMENEXT
