Developing A Purpose Statement You have a purpose, how will you describe it?

Definition A purpose statement captures succinctly why the organization exists and what it does. Usually purpose statements are phrased like this: “We are ________________ who _____________ by _________________.” A purpose statement captures succinctly why the organization exists and what it does. Usually purpose statements are phrased like this: “We are ________________ who _____________ by _________________.”

Qualities of a Purpose Statement Specific - Unique to your organization. Measurable - How will you know it has been accomplished? Attainable - Achievable within the realm of faith. Relevant - Worthy of accomplishment. Time-bound - Incorporates a time frame for accomplishment. Strategic - It will capture the resources of our entire organization. Fannie Mae: Our purpose is to strengthen the social fabric by continually democratizing home ownership. 3M: Our purpose is to solve unsolved problems innovatively. STRATEGICALLY it will consume and compel all the resources of the organization. –Every aspect of our organization must be bent in this direction. Each must be able to show how their area contributes to the overall purpose.
