Exporting Soil Testing Equipment to Nepal By: Sylvain Laemmler University of Guelph

Nepal

Agriculture More than 80% of the Nepalese population is based around agriculture. The country contain 8 of the worlds 10 tallest mountains. One third of the population is below the poverty line. Transportation is difficult in Nepal. Primary crops planted include rice, wheat, maze.

Terei Mustard Fields

Mid Hills The mid hills agriculture is based around terraced farming.

H-4112 Percometer Cost: $10500

Munsell Soil Colour Classification Book Munsell%20Soil%20Color%20Book&itemnum=77321 Cost: $300

Possibilities and Benefits Total cost per unit are approximately $11 300, depending on shipping. The equivalent value in Nepal is approximately rupees. The agricultural producers of Nepal will be able to identify the specific types of soils of their land, as well as the dielectric value, and electrical conductivity. The producers can consult local resources based on the tests and classification they have received. Benefits both Nepal as well as M&L Testing Equipment. Nepalese receive soil classification results, while M&L receives a new market for exports.

Results Though the analysis percometer technology would benefit the agricultural producers of Nepal, it is much too expensive for most of the Nepalese. The only alternative would be if the Nepal Department of Agriculture facilitated the purchase and usage of the equipment. An competent analyser would also be required to determine the readings of the percometer, as the average Nepalese is unlikely to know how to use the percometer. The Nepalese do not speak English either, making understanding the results more of a challenge. The only large scale viable option is the export of the Book of Soil Colour Charts to Nepal.
