HD Radio: The Terrestrial Broadcasting Solution Will Elkins Team 4

Historical Paradigm Shifts Radio as main form of broadcast entertainment: 1920’s to 1950’s Television brings new competition: 1950’s

Historical Paradigm Shifts Radio rules in cars: late 1950’s to early 2000’s AM – FM split: 1960’s

The Solution CENSORED

HD: WTF?  Based on IBOC (In Band On Channel) developed by USA Digital Radio Partners in 1991  HD developed by iBiquity Digital Corp. (merger of USA and Lucent Digital Radio in 2000)  HD = Hybrid Digital/High Definition/pure BS = + + +

How Does It Work?  Same as regular radio, except a bundled signal (digital and analog)  Since digital, information can be transmitted along with audio  Digitally compressed for multicasting and enhanced services  Receivers sort through “bounced” signals therefore enhancing clarity

Why HD? Consumer P.O.V. AM = FM Quality FM = Quality Free: one time fee to get HD receiver More varied content available with the same local connection

Why HD? The Station P.O.V. (Straight from the Horses Mouth) Jeremy Whiting: Impact 89FM Program Director (pictured left with Ronald McDonald)

The Not-to-Distant Future  The “Buy” Button  Store-and-Replay technology  On Demand  Traffic reports displayed on navigation screen  Less commercials
