GIS for a City Presentation for Kerman Andrew U. Frank Technical University Wien, Austria

Rapidly changing world Many problems and opportunities for a city: Growth of a city: new buildings Increase in traffic Higher demand for services (water, electricity, transportation) Rehabilitation of existing buildings Create new jobs, for example in tourism

Decisions by city Rational, fact based decisions make better use of limited resources. Less use of Land, Capital People Historic heritage For more service to the citizens.

Rational decisions require information The city council needs information to make good decisions. The Geographic Information System of the city can provide this information.

Geographic Information System Produces information when required about Land ownership, land use Utilities like electricity, water, sewage Roads Public institutions: schools, cultural Topography Etc. etc.

Geographic Information Systems Produce information in graphical form for analysis and communication but also gives Tools for systematic numerical and statistical analysis.

Applications: Traffic Analysis Identify the bottlenecks! What effects has a proposed change for the rest of the traffic situation? Avoids that one improvement creates a new problem at another intersection. Analysis of traffic accident locations.

Application: Public Services An up-to-date inventory and map of the existing services improves service for the citizens. Failures in the system can be repaired more quickly.

Applications: Urban Planning Identify areas where new construction produces less demand on the construction of new city facilities. Plan the facilities for new developments: Traffic, Water, Sewage, etc.

Applications: Maintenance of Street surfaces accidents location Register Street quality Establish a plan for maintenance within a determined budget.

Application: Tourism Produce tourist maps and other form of information for tourists: Lists of cultural heritage List of Hotels, Restaurants and their location

Application: Tree cadastre Have an inventory of the trees in your city. Maintain their health!

Technology The systems are mature, all the major vendors provide all the necessary functions. Hardware is standardized and widely available. Technology is not an issue!

Need for educated staff Technical systems like Geographic Information systems are only as good as the people operating them. Invest in educating your staff – it is worth it!

Conclusion Most of the decision of a city council have spatial aspects. The Geographic Information System of the city provides the information for the city council to make good, fact based decisions. A Geographic Information System improves indirectly the life of the citizens.
