Welding 1

What is Welding? Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. This is often done by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material that cools to become a strong joint, with pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld. 2

What is it used for? Welding process are used to fabricate a wide variety of objects. Basic welding skills will always be useful for personal projects. 3

Uses of welding 4 Advanced welding skills are very marketable. Welding is a popular way to produce art.

What do you need to know? According to the US department of labor, a welder must be able to: 5 1Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits. 2Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. 3Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits. 4Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt components parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding. 5Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors. 6Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux- cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding and submerged arc welding. 7Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material. 8Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. 9Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straight edges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.

What abilities are required? According to the US department of labor a welder must have: 6 1Arm-hand steadiness. 2Near vision. 3Control precision. 4Manual dexterity. 5Finger dexterity. 6Multilimb coordination. 7Oral expression. 8Problem sensitivity. 9Oral comprehension. 10Selective attention..
