What is Forensic Psychology? Forensic psychology is the application of psychological insights, concepts and skills to the understanding and functioning of the legal and criminal justice system. It embraces psychology and the law, the psychology of police and policing, eyewitness identification, jury research, corrections, probation, parole, victim services, addiction services, and family services. Forensic psychology embraces a full range of activities throughout the criminal justice system from law enforcement to the treatment of offenders.

Job Duties A forensic psychologist assesses the mindset of an individual who has committed a crime. They often work independently and are called upon to testify in court to provide evidence. In addition to providing expert witness testimony, they may consult with court officials, prepare written psychological reports, interview criminal defendants and make determinations as to whether a criminal can stand trial. A criminal psychologist must also be familiar with laws concerning mental health and criminal behavior. Maintaining this knowledge might involve keeping current on any upcoming changes to existing legislation.

Hours they work Hours ; 35-40 per week Working hours would typically be 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Yearly rate of pay The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary of a Forensic Psychologist was $64,140 as of May 2008. The lowest-paid 10 percent of Forensic Psychologists earn less than $37,900 per year, while the highest-paid 10 percent earn more than $106,840

What educational background is needed? A doctoral degree in forensic psychology is required for a career as a criminal psychologist. Currently, there are two types of psychology doctoral degrees: the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychology and the Doctor of Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.).

Why did I choose this career? I chose this career because I’ve always been into the mysterious crimes . Since I was little I’ve always watched those kinds of shows . They got my attention very quickly . Since that day I want to do Forensic Psychology as my career .
