Modern and Contemporary Art (1900 – Present)

 He felt that choreography, music, and dancing were not relating to one another in ballets.  He developed a five point philosophy for ballet production.

 Dance movements appropriate to the music  Movements should move the story forward  The entire body, rather than gestures, should be used in expressing ideas.  The dance ensemble on stage should develop the idea of dance and be part of the plot.  The music, scenery, dancing, and costuming should all coordinate, producing a unified work of art.

 Impresario – Producer

 Famous impresario who produced the Ballet Russe. A ballet company whose home was first in Paris then Monte Carlo. He brought together the best composers, Debussy, Stravinsky, and others with visual artist such as Picasso for set design to create a successful creative effort.

 Said to be the greatest male dancer of his time.  Joined Diaghileff’s Ballet Russe in  Ahead of his time for creating new, modern movement for ballet.

 One of the finest female ballerinas of her time, also one of the most famous in ballet history.  Famous for her role of the Dying Swan because of its interpretation through physical technique.
