Jorge A. Delucca Industrial Hygienist Occupational Safety and Health Administration September 26, 2006 Spanish Language Safety & Health Resources

Just for Fun Puerto Rico has been part of the US since 1898 –(Captured during the Spanish-American War) Since 1917 Puertorricans have been US citizens by birth

Challenge: Language Barrier Hispanics from different countries, or even different regions of the same country, often have slight differences in dialects (name of industrial equipment).

Language Barrier Tex Mex versus Spanish –Tex Mex adopted English terms in their vocabulary. They may have difficulty reading correct Spanish –Many Hispanic workers use slang (Anglicism) in their vocabulary (especially names of machines and technical terms)

Language Barrier What is a normal word in one Hispanic country could be obscene in another Example: the word for “Cake” in Puerto Rico means something else in Mexico! –It can be VERY embarrassing

Language Barrier Cannot translate literally from English to Spanish Some words have more than one meaning –Example: Seguridad means Safety –But it also means Security

Safety Training for Hispanics in in Dallas and Ft. Worth OSHA and Hispanic Contractors Association provide free 10-hour Construction safety courses, in Spanish and English, in Dallas & Ft. Worth, monthly. Construction safety publications in Spanish available A limited number of bilingual trainers is available

The Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW Training Program 1. An annual safety fair for construction workers and health fair for family members is held in April Hour OSHA Construction safety courses (evenings & weekends) for HCA members –-OSHA bilingual CSHOs assist

The Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW Training Program A 10 Hour OSHA Training Marathon was conducted at Richland College by HCA and OSHA –Spanish and English –Construction and General Industry –434 persons trained free

The Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW Training Program Why not offer English as second language? –Many organizations now do –It takes many years of study and practice to become bilingual Easier to learn when very young (Grade school) A short course in English will not be enough.
