THE 2 ND COMMANDMENT: THE RIGHT USE OF GOD’S NAME Lesson 9 Faith Foundations Course One

THE RIGHT USE OF GOD’S NAME How does God want us to use his name?

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 1.God tells us, “Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you” (Exodus 20:24). What blessings do we have through God’s name? We have peace, knowing that God will bless us. And we have confidence, knowing that God always keeps his promises.

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 2.Read the Bible story of the ten lepers in Luke 17: Jesus healed these men from a terribly contagious disease which had no known cure. Support this statement: By turning to God for help in their time of need, the lepers were honoring Jesus. By asking Jesus for help, they trusted him.

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 3.John’s mom had to quit her job because of an illness. Shortly after that, John’s father lost his job when the company closed the local plant. Psalm 50:15 points to one way God wants people like John and his family to use his name. How might you use this verse to encourage John? God invites us to turn to him in times of trouble. God promises to deliver us.

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 4.Recall the Bible story in Daniel 6 of the prophet in the lions’ den. How was Daniel honoring God’s name when he was “caught in the act” by his enemies? Daniel was praying to God, even though the king outlawed it.

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 5.Read 1 Thessalonians 5:17. When Mat found out that his grandfather had cancer, he would pray several times every day for God to bless the doctors’ work as they tried to stop the disease… How did his regular prayers honor God? They showed Mat’s faith in God that, if it is his will, God can heal Mat’s grandfather.

REMEMBER, GOD CAN HELP US 6.Discuss how these two situation are similar. A little child calls out to Mom or Dad in the middle of the night. We call out to God in a time of trouble. Just like children know and experience their parent’s love, we know and experience our heavenly Father’s love.

KEY POINT #1 God tells us… to call upon his name in every trouble and to pray to him at all times.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 7.Recall again the ten lepers who were healed by Jesus. How did the one leper use God’s name in a way that pleased God? He praised and thanked Jesus.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 8.When we hear of the ten lepers, we may wonder how the nine could show such ingratitude. Why should their ingratitude not surprise us? We are often guilty of the same sin.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 9.Think of some blessings God has given you for which you have forgotten to thank him.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 10.Read the first verse in Psalms 103—107. How is God’s name used in these verses? To give praise and thanks.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 11.Read Psalm 118:1. Why do we give thanks to the Lord? Because of his goodness and everlasting love.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 12.What are some ways we can thank God for the many blessings he has given us. Pray. Don’t complain. Worship. Sing hymns. Give offerings. Tell others what God has done for you.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 13.A teacher once asked her students to help her make a list of good thing for which they should thank God. After they had a long list on the board, Mary raised her hand and said, “My grandma said we should thank God even for the bad things that happen in our lives.” What do you think Mary’s grandma meant? She knew that even in bad times, God was still in control and would make it turn out good.

REMEMBER, GOD DESERVES OUR THANKS 14.Read Isaiah 43:21. What does God expect of his people? To proclaim his praise.

KEY POINT #2 God tells us… to praise and give thanks to him.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT USE OF GOD’S NAME? 1.God tells us to call upon his name in every trouble and to pray to him at all times. 2.God tells us to praise and give thanks to him. SUMMARY God tells us to call upon his name in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.
