Distributing & Combining Like Terms in Expressions

Distributing & Combining Like Terms Distribute first Then combine like terms Example 1: 3(x + 5) - 8 Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Get rid of any zero pairs. Count up what you have left and that will be your answer! Answer: 3x + 7

Example 2 2(3x + 2) + 2x Group 1Group 2 Get rid of any zero pairs. Then count up what you have left. What you have left will be your answer. Answer: 8x + 4

Example 3 2(x – 4) + -3x + 5 Group 2 Group 1 Cross of zero pairs.Answer: -x - 3

Try these with your algebra tiles 1.2(2x – 3) (2x - 4) x + 2(x – 3) 4.5(x – 2) (-x + 3) + x (x - 4) + 2(-x + 5) 4x - 3 4x x - 6 5x x + 7 2
