Presentation transcript:

Is web-based seminar an effective way of learning as a part of information management and information systems development course? Pekka Makkonen University of Jyväskylä FINLAND

2 Course An undergraduate course for the first-year majors: Information management and information systems development Themes (1) administrative view to information resources management, (2) technological view to information resources management, (3) building information systems, and (4) organizational applications

3 Why web-based seminar? increased amount of information systems education as well as students at universities-> impossibility to organize conventional seminars Need for more flexibility because of heterogeneity of the students Adult education

4 How? Web CT and its presentations feature Working in small groups (3 to 5 students) with feasibility study which dealt with one typical information system (stock control, sales order processing, etc.) Presentations were put in each group’s separate workspace on the web Other groups commented on the outcomes Control groups to compare the value

6 Our research goals how the students’ knowledge of different themes was improved, how the students experienced the coursework methods (web-based or traditional), and whether age, a group size, a gender and a faculty affect the effectiveness of the learning of different themes. How did we evaluate these goals? Questionnaires (at the beginning and the end)

7 What we got The WWW-based coursework and seminar have equal effect on learning different themes of the course The students of IT faculty benefited more from the web-based coursework in the learning of building information systems The Web CT-based coursework suits a little bit better for older students and it can enable effective group work in the bigger group.

8 Personal thoughts Prefer HTML format Avoid use of subfolders Think about differences of browsers As a teacher do not use all the features of a learning environment: think about your pedagogical design first. Blended learning
