Ethics, Genetics & The Government Mrs. McNamara’s Biology Class

Project Overview This lesson will be used within the genetics unit. It will be introduced to the class as a project. There will be time in class although the student’s will complete most of the project on their own time. The timeline will be approximately 7 to 10 days. This project will cover stem cells, cloning, and any other genetic topic that interests that the student’s have discovered during their research.

Step One Search the Library of Congress Complete a the Scavenger Hunt search of current legislation regarding genetics

Step Two Choose a topic! Claim the topic and post it on the class blog.

Step Three The student’s will need to do some Internet research to find more sources to support their topic. They will need to find sources that are for their topic, sources that are neutral to the topic, and sources that are against the topic. Primary sources that contain actual life experiences would benefit the project. The student’s must make sure that they are keeping track of where they are getting their information, this will be needed for the projects bibliography.

Step Four The student’s will need to create a brochure to distribute to the class about their topic. The class will create the rubric to follow while creating the brochure. The brochure should be made with Microsoft Word or Publisher. There are links to give directions on how to use the computer programs.

Step Five Student’s must be prepared to distribute and explain the brochure to the class. They must also be prepared to answer questions from the class.

Step Six Group Grading Student’s will work in a group to analyze and grade the brochures presented to the class. The rubric will guide the group as they assess the brochures. This rubric will be turned in and included as part of the project grade.

Class Blog Student’s will need to go to the class blog site regularly to post their questions and participate in ethical discussions.
