SVT L.Ristori1 SVT Workshop July 22, 2003 Summary (1) Minimal upgrade for run IIb silicon –Detailed bit level format for hits from HF’s to Mergers needs to be worked out. Need to prove that we have enough bits to carry necessary information –Evaluate pros and cons of installing additional mergers all in one crate vs. one per phi sector (and all TF’s in one crate?) –Study how many sets of coefficients are needed in the TF’s to accommodate the new geometry –G-link routing must be compatible with the HF- stave allocation in Bill’s scheme. Must be checked with silicon readout experts –We need simulation in order to evaluate patterns, efficiency, timing, d resolution, fake rate… unfortunately no Run2b silicon simulation exists so far New TF architecture –We can stuff 30 to 50 DSP’s per board –Each DSP would fit one hit combination in ~ 1 microsecond –One FPGA would generate and distribute hit combinations to DSP’s –Beam subtraction would be included

SVT L.Ristori2 SVT Workshop July 22, 2003 Summary (2) Road warrior –Kills redundant roads created by 4/5 –Can be implemented with new firmware on a GhostBuster or Pulsar board –Before or after HB? (Needs simulation studies) –Extrapolation to Run2b luminosity –Plan is to have RW’s in place coming out of the shutdown. Work needs to start very soon. One person needs to be identified (3-6 month job) AM upgrade –It is hard to justify in terms of high pt physics –Motivation is B physics –Silicon only tracking at high pt and smaller beam spot? –The benefits of improved timing must be studied with MODSIM in the assumption that all other trigger and DAQ planned improvements are successful (“there is no magic bullet”) –The number of patterns needed for the new geometry can be studied with Giovanni’s simplified simulation? –Justify upgrade with current geometry. New geometry will be more demanding in terms of number of patterns

SVT L.Ristori3 SVT Workshop July 22, 2003 Summary (3) Pulsar is the workhorse for the SVT upgrade? –Solid and powerful hardware –Lots of expertise –May substitute AMS+HB+RW in the long run improved performance and long term maintainability –Need to spec the full system an then go for an evolutionary path
