Central Lutheran Church 12 th Street S. and 3 rd Ave. S Founded 1918 We are in the City for good.

Central Lutheran’s Vision We envision becoming a thriving, vibrant model of urban Lutheran ministry for the 21st century. This lofty vision requires us to ask each day if our goals for worship, learning and service are clearly reaching a diverse neighborhood and city in language and actions that reflect the world as well as our heritage.

Project Genesis Changes in City requirements Minneapolis Code Disconnect all roof drains from the sanitary sewer system. (SS) Central’s internal roof drain system designed to discharge stormwater into the City’s sanitary sewer system (SS) City notice of mandate “Roof drains need to be disconnected from the SS by a licensed plumber. Stormwater needs to be redirected to discharge outside onto grade or directly connected to a storm drain if one is available.”

First Step Disconnection # Disconnected NE drainpipe. Drained to new surface stormwater detention basin and underground chamber Total cost: $15-$20 K

City & Central get serious We decided to do more…. Underground infiltration / stormwater detention system captures roof runoff. Diverts additional stormwater from SS E side of property. Total area served 1.08 acres Applied 2010 MWMO Stewardship Funds Action Grant using BMP & “handling” 60% more water than required.

Green: drains NE into dry well, 2008 Red: drains into catch basis on E 4 th Ave., 2009 Light Blue: will drain to StormTech infiltration system Dark Blue: Original location – since moved

Campus areas of interest Church roof (mandate)0.42 acres Accessible lot0.11 acres Green space/patio0.14 acres Street R-O-W0.41 acres Total1.08 acre Project exceeded requirements by 60% Area to drain 53,735 sq. ft. Storage volume 15,068 cu. ft 24 hr capacity29,290 cu. ft.

Multi dimensional programming Capital project – BMP stormwater plan Educational offerings for all Highly visible location Celebration of success Ongoing sustainability goals

2011 Stewardship Fund Action Grant Mississippi Watershed Management Organization 2011 BUDGET Capital project cost$178,000 Interpretive Signage$ 1,500 Educational supplies$ 2,750 Food -celebration$ 750 TOTAL$183,721 MWMO- 50,000 Central funds$133,721

Environmentally & Fiscally Responsible Central Saves. Project Nearly Paid with Deferred Cost Savings Now $17,500 /yr. storm water treatment fees Almost all will go away when detention project is finished If borrow $130,000 at 6% for 10 years, the payment is $17,660 annually City Saves. Reduction in water preserves systems - storm & sanitary.

Public-Private Partnership MWMO Goals (and Ours) Goal 1: Improve water quality or improve water and natural resource management. Be good stewards - care for creation. Goal 2: Build community understanding, knowledge, and initiative related to water and natural resources issues and solutions.

Goal 1: Improve Water Quality Lasting Impact Minimizes negative impact of snow melt on watershed. Reduces runoff from parking lot & street → pollutants, street & soil surface materials flow into SS Issue of justice to the ELCA Universal, sustainable access to sufficient, safe, acceptable, accessible and affordable water

Goal 2: Build Community Understanding Intergenerational education for Central and our neighborhood. More than awareness. Educate to change behavior Personal accountability for stewardship of natural resources. Tied water conservation & appreciation into many Central activities. Respect, Conserve, Care for God’s Creation

StormTech Recommends the “ Treatment Train ” approach

Pre-Treatment Isolator Row

Construction in Process! September, 2011 start 6-8 weeks October, 2011 finish

Who Benefits? A Win for All 1.Enhanced environment 2.Positive impact on city systems – extended life 3.Positive impact on Central 4.Success breeds success

What’s Next? Continuing education with signage & maintenance Overall campus master plan Explore other means of sustainability And…….
