MAURITIUS STANDARDS BUREAU Overview of MS 165:2014 - Sustainable Tourism Prepared by: M Y Foondun Acting Deputy Director Mauritius Standards Bureau

1. Why the need for greening of our tourism industry? - Tourism contributes to 5% of greenhouse gas emissions - To mitigate the environmental impacts of tourism activities - Increasing demand for green destinations - Long term Sustainability of the tourism sector

Aims to conserve and protect the people and places we visit, by addressing the impacts on 3 main areas: Environmental protection Socio-cultural responsibility Economic health Sustainability is a journey without a finishing line.

6. Cultural heritage values To follow code of behaviour for visits to culturally or historically sensitive sites. Ensure that historical artefacts not sold or traded, except as permitted by law. Contribute to the protection of local historical/culturally sites. Use elements of local art, cultural heritage while respecting intellectual property rights of the communities.
