Gifted Testing in the Kyrene School District “Children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.” – US Department of Education, 1993

What is a Gifted Child? A student who has scored at or above the 97th percentile in one or more areas on the Cognitive Abilities Test or another state-approved test: Verbal (Language) A student who exhibits strong reasoning with spoken and written material, involved in the language arts area Quantitative (Math) A student who exhibits strong reasoning when working with numbers and math concepts Nonverbal (Spatial Reasoning) A student who exhibits strong reasoning with shapes and puzzles This means that a child scored in the top 3% of their same age peers, according to national norms In other words, out of every 100 students in a school, 3 students will be identified as a gifted learner.

Kyrene’s Gifted Testing Process In order to make an informed decision for your child, please consider the information shown in this slide show Speak to your child’s teacher before continuing the process If your child’s teacher does not feel that your child is a good candidate at this time, please consider waiting until testing is more appropriate If the teacher agrees that your child is a good candidate for gifted testing then: 1. Complete the Online Application for Gifted Testing 2. Receive a confirmation email from the Kyrene District Office with the next step in the testing process 3. Receive a Parent Permission form 2-3 weeks prior to the testing date to be completed and sent back
