Northern England Strategic Clinical Network Conference 15 th May 2015 The Northern Children’s Surgical Network Gareth Hosie

Values and Principles The overall principle of the network is to ensure that children in the north of England receive the best quality surgical care in a safe, appropriate environment, located as close to their home as possible

Objectives Care and treatment should be ‘child and family centred’ focused on the needs of the child and family, rather than the needs of the service.(eg profit) Care should be provided by trained and experienced staff, in appropriately equipped facilities. Children requiring surgery should be cared for in an appropriate environment· Children, young people and parents/carers should have up to date and accurate information and where possible participate in their care.

Current workplan To have a clear understanding of volume of specialist surgery within each of the units Deliver an educational programme for surgeons undertaking paediatric practice Agree network wide guidelines self-assess against these to identify good practice and areas for improvement

Education

Finally This is a two way process so that surgeons in secondary centres are not left exposed or unsupported, but also do not have good practice taken away.
