EXPLORING PROBABILITY GRADE 3

Hello, How are you? Today, we are going to start a new lesson.

Probability The chances that an event will occur is called Probability. Example – There are 4 red pens in a bag. The probability of picking a pen is certain.

Possible Outcomes Any of the results that could occur in an experiment is Possible Outcome. Example – Heads and tails are the possible outcomes when flipping a coin.

Certain and Impossible There are 6 yellow marbles and 1 black marble in the box. Lisa picks one marble from the box. It is certain that Lisa will pick a marble. There are only marbles in the box. It is impossible that Lisa will pick a green marble. None of the marbles are green.

Likely and unlikely It is likely that Lisa will pick a yellow marble. Six out of seven marbles are Yellow. It is unlikely that Lisa will pick a black marble. Only 1 out of 7 marbles is black.

Write certain, likely, unlikely or impossible. Three fruits are shown in the picture. a) a piece of fruit b) Apple c) Strawberry d) Banana Answer- a) Certain b) Impossible c) Unlikely d) likely

If you have 5 green cubes and 2 pink cubes. Which cube you are likely to pull out of box? Answer - Green

What is the probability of coin landing on head? Answer- Equally likely – There are same number of heads and tails.

Use the Chart below and the words likely, unlikely, certain or impossible to describe the probability

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 contains a 5? Answer- unlikely

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 is greater than 0? Answer- Certain

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 is greater than 10? Answer- likely

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 has 3 digits? Answer- Impossible

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 is a multiple of 10? Answer - unlikely

What is the probability that the whole numbers from 1-50 has only 1 digit? Answer- unlikely

ASSESSMENT

Answer Questions (1-4) using the cubes. 1.What is the probability that on tossing you get 7? All sides of cube Answer - Impossible

2.What is the probability that you will get a multiple of 2 if you roll the cube? Answer- Likely

3.What is the probability that you will get 3 on rolling the dice? Answer- unlikely

4.What is the probability that you will get a number less than 6 on rolling the dice? Answer- Certain

A Candy bag has 2 cherry candies and 6 banana candy. Answer questions (5-7) 5. Kerry is going to pick one candy from the bag. What is the probability that she will pick a banana candy? Answer - likely

6.What is the probability that she will pick a cherry candy? Answer- Unlikely

7.What is the probability that she will pick a candy? Answer- Certain

A spinner is divided into 9 equal sections numbered 1 through 9. Answer questions (8-10).

8.If Jack spin’s the spinner, what is the probability that he will land on a number less than 8? Answer - Certain

9. What is the probability that he will land on either an odd or even number less than 10 ? Answer - Certain

10. What is the probability that he will land on 2 digit number? Answer- Impossible

Recap Probability Possible outcomes Likely and unlikely Certain and Impossible Solved Examples Practice Problems

Well Done! Now practice worksheets on the lesson.
