BE INSPIRED TO BE AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER Based on a break out session presented by Deb Moore from Raymond S. Kellis High School in Glendale, Arizona. This break out session was presented at the National ACTE conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER?  Most teachers just want to do their jobs without recognition from others. However,  Recognition for what you do will bring attention to your programs.  Recognition for what you do will show the value of your programs.  Recognition will help your programs grow. Students will want to be in your class because of what they hear from others.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER?  Recognition will inspire non traditional students to be in your programs as they hear about your class from your current non trad students.  Parents will be interested in your programs and encourage their students to take your class.  Administrators, school board members and those that make important decisions are going to pay attention to what you are doing when students, parents and others are talking about your program and about you as an instructor.

HOW TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER  Inspire your students!  Mentor your students.  Show your students you care.  Your students will trust and respect you if you show you care. They are going to tell others about you and your programs.  Lead by example and show your students how to have a positive outlook on their education and life.

HOW TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER  Connect with parents.  Respond to s and phone calls as soon as possible.  Make time to connect with parents before they connect with you.  Show the parents you care about their child.

HOW TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER  Building relationships with families, no matter how small will help you shine! One teacher that stands out to me from all of my daughters teachers was a math teacher. For each phone call he had to make regarding a student with a bad report he would call three other parents of students to offer a good report. I still remember him calling our house and wondering why he was calling. Not only was that call positive for our daughter I also learned a lesson from a coworker. It really does not take that long to make those calls.

BUT WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER?  Creating relationships with students, parents and the community will make you an award winning teacher in the hearts and minds of many, but what else can you do to become an award winning teacher that will bring even more attention to your programs?

BUT WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO BECOME AN AWARD WINNING TEACHER?  Join local and national organizations that are beneficial to your program of study.  Build a working relationship with others that teach within the same program of study  Keep your eyes and ears open for awards you can enter or awards that others can enter you in.  Enter your peers, coworkers and others in award contests. They will do the same for you.

EXAMPLES (COMMUNITY)  Local awards OnPoint Community Credit Union OnPoint has always understood that strong education is one of the best ways to build thriving communities. The OnPoint Prize is our opportunity to recognize outstanding teachers that have made a difference in our lives. Nominations are being accepted until 5:30 pm on April 6, K103.3 Educator of the week Concordia University is a proud sponsor of K103's Educator of the Week. Both Concordia and K103 thank all the amazing educators who make our schools great!" december-12th / december-12th /

EXAMPLES (CTE)  Organization Awards Oregon ACTE The Oregon ACTE Excellence Awards seek to promote excellence in career and technical education by recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field, programs that exemplify the highest standards and organizations that have conducted activities to promote and expand career and technical education programs. National ACTE The ACTE Excellence Awards promote excellence in career and technical education. Since 1954, ACTE has recognized those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to CTE, programs that exemplify the highest standards and organizations that have conducted activities to promote and expand CTE programs. Award winners serve as inspirational leaders to ACTE: they embody the core values of serving their students and being committed to CTE.

EXAMPLES (STATE)  Oregon Teacher of the Year Every year, each of the 50 states names a teacher of the year. The Oregon Teacher of the Year Program started in Candidates for Oregon Teacher of the Year should be exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled educators in grades preK-12 (administrative responsibilities should be of secondary consideration). The candidate should be planning to continue in an active teaching status. In addition, candidates for Oregon Teacher of the Year should: inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues play an active role in the community as well as in school be a poised and articulate representative of all Oregon classroom teachers

EXAMPLES (PROGRAM SPECIFIC)  SkillsUSA :SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. Advisor of the Year The SkillsUSA State Directors Association created the Advisor of the Year award to recognize and honor dedicated career and technical education instructors who serve as SkillsUSA advisors. State winners are submitted to the regional competition. Also have other yearly awards  Oregon AITC (agriculture) This competitive award will recognize an outstanding teacher for their creative efforts to teach students about the importance of agriculture. Teachers currently engaged in integrating agricultural concepts into non-vocational agriculture classroom settings at the K-12 level are eligible. This may be an individual teacher or a team of teachers (with a designated team leader).

SCAPPOOSE SCHOOL DISTRICT AWARDS  Teachers receive awards at 20 years 25 years 30 years 35 years Retirement These awards consist of Chrystal Apple, Bell and Pen, Iceberg statue award and more Scappoose School District does not honor a Teacher of the Year. Your district may.

SCAPPOOSE SCHOOL DISTRICT WEEKLY AWARD Peer recognition  Ducky awards!  Yes you have been “Ducked”

DUCKY RECOGNITION  Our district office came up with this idea as a way for all district employees to be recognized. Every Monday morning the Google recognition form is open and the first 10 people entered receive a duck along with the information that was entered when submitted. The document closes once 10 nominations are entered.

DUCKY RECOGNITION The intention of this award was meant to recognize people for going above and beyond their normal duties. Pros: People love to be recognized for doing good things. Cons: The Google document closes after 10 nominations without someone reviewing the nominations and the blurb written about them. Many people have received the award week after week (secretaries, maintenance workers, counselors and district office personnel are the most recognized individuals) While we know who is Ducked each week we never know why they were nominated. As teachers we do not have time on Monday mornings to get online and nominate our peers.

TEACHER APPRECIATION  As a writing prompt in April I have my students chose a teacher within our district that they would like to write to and share with them how they may have impacted their education or made an impression on them for some reason.  I then deliver these letters to the teachers.  Student recognition is one of the best rewards I have ever received!

CLOSING THOUGHTS If you are like me you just want to do your job and not be recognized. However, I learned from the session I attended that recognition can bring a lot of good to our programs. supplies, money, more students, valuable support, and more I would like you to leave here today thinking of at least one person you could nominate for one of the Community or CTE awards or even both! I think it would be awesome if our region would have some CTE winners at the Local or National level – but that can only happen if we nominate each other!
