-The first music videos were created in the early 1900’s. They were simplistic movies with no dialogue and orchestrated background music. -Early experiments had live orchestras as there was a lack of technology to combine them In 1929 the Russian film revolutionary Dziga Vertov made a 40 minute film called Man with the Movie. The film is entirely backed by music (played live by an orchestra on theaters) and has no dialogue at all. It's notable for the use of fast editing and fast frame frequencies, which were all synched to the music in order to create an emotion on the viewer. Animation pioneer Max Fleischer introduced a series of sing-along short cartoons called Screen Songs, which invited audiences to sing along to popular songs by "following the bouncing ball". Early 1930s entries in the series featured popular musicians performing their hit songs on-camera in live-action segments during the cartoons.

In the early to mid 1980s, artists started to use more sophisticated effects in their videos, and added a storyline or plot to the music video. Michael Jackson was the first artist to create the concept of the short film.1980sMichael Jackson It wasn't until the 1984 release of the Thriller short film that he took the music video format to another level. Thriller was a 13-minute-long music video with a clear beginning, middle and ending. Along with the plot, it also had ahead- of-its-time special effects and a memorable dance sequence which has been mimicked ever since this video was released.Thriller Thriller was considered the Most Expensive Music Video of its time. In 1940, Walt Disney released Fantasia, an animated film based around famous pieces of classical music. When released in the animated film Yellow Submarinee was an international sensation, although The Beatles themselves had only a tangential involvement with it.

Opera was a type of music in which a story is being told The Link between Music and film/acting It has brought about new techniques in film/drama Ex. PROMOTION INFLUENCE ON POP CULTURE Music Videos are traditionally made to promote the song, and album of the artist. - It allows for the music to be presented to a large audience -By seeing the Artist perform, it allows for the audience to feel more connected to them. Music Videos are also known for setting trends and standards in style: Clothes are promoted through Mainstream artists Dancing- What’s “in” and whats just plain lame. Attitude- How to act for your corresponding stereotype!

Music Videos are often critized for creating the need for perfect Appearances Pressure to look “perfect” put many “unaesthetically pleasing” artists out of buisness. They can also be seen as partially to blame for the self-image problems in the world. Music Videos create not only the artists views and opinions on the world, they create a larger way for fans to follow them. They show their followings new ways to dress, or act. Many mainstream artists (Gwen Stefani,etc) create their own Fashion lines that are often marketed through Music Videos.

-MTV started in 1977, and was part of a cable company called “Quebe” It wasn’t originally MTV, just a small station that featured late night coverage of Concerts, etc. In 1981, the format was changed directly to Music Videos -The first words spoken were “Ladies and Gentlemen, Lets Rock and Roll” -The First Video played was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. The early music videos that made up the bulk of the network's programming in the '80s were often crude promotional or concert clips from whatever sources could be found; as the popularity of the network rose, and record companies recognized the potential of the medium as a tool to gain recognition and publicity, they began to create increasingly elaborate clips specifically for the network. Several noted film directors got their start creating music videos, including Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and David Fincher.
