Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility Paola Grosso AIR/ UvA

Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility What is iGrid? Lambda networking in the scientific community: it is not just different services over different wavelenghts in the same fiber. It indicates the creation of dedicated and application-specific lightpaths. iGrid 2005, the 4 th community-driven biennial International Grid event, held in San Diego from Sep.26 to Sep.29. An example of lambda networking: -Optical devices End user application that communicate w/o intermediate L2 or L3 services -High bandwidth utilization Applications with lots of data -Flexible and reconfigurable network setup Setup changed on the fly to accommodate varying lightpaths -International connectivity Connections to all demonstrator countries

Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility Closer look: layer3 infrastructure

Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility The UvA involvement The UvA/SARA LightHouse was used during the workshop to provide connectivity to UCSD via NetherLight: -To applications using cluster nodes located in Amsterdam -To applications transiting via Amsterdam Layer2 switches (Force10 E600 and Nortel ESR 8610) provided WANPHY connectivity to the remote sites and LANPHY connectivity for locally attached nodes. Nortel ESRForce10NetherLight StarLight Force10 iGrid Force10 Local clusters SARA switch

Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility Some results Many demos, just remembering some in their relation to lambda networking: –Link-local addressing demo With its automatic configuration of end nodes showed a way to address reconfigurability –Nortel/ UvA VM Turntable demo & Nortel/UvA Token Based AAA With its use of end-to-end completely optical setup showed the typical use of optical devices –SARA Tiled Display demo, a throughput record breaker With its high throughput showed the need of dedicated path that are tuned to the application needs … and all of them with a very international flavor.

Oct RoN meetingiGrid2005: a lambda networking facility Conclusions iGrid2005 (and SC|05 coming up) are learning experiences on the current status of lambda networking facilities. An article focusing on the network setup will be part of the special edition magazine on the workshop. What have we learned? A lot, but mostly the need for automatic light paths creations and resource reservation and brokering. See later presentation on RDF and Resource Brokering by Bert Andree. Comments and questions:
