Nikki’s Q/C Presentation S301 and ESR Connection

Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) ESR is a national non-profit organization founded in ESR works directly with educators to implement systemic practices that create safe, caring, and equitable schools so that all young people succeed in school and life, and help shape a safe, democratic, and just world.

Holly’s Q/C Share Stress and the idea that a protective adult role can help prevent toxic stress from developing Relationships are key Advisor?

The History of Advisory Turning Points 1989 suggests, “Every student should be well known by at least one adult” Turning Points 2000 states, “Among youth at risk…the most important school factor for fostering resilience… may be the availability of at least one caring responsible adult who can function as a mentor” -- The Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development

The Advisory Puzzle Goals and Outcomes Grouping Content,Themes, Formats Schedule Advisor’s role & expectations PD Accountability Linking Advisory Materials & Resources

Safety Adolescents learn best when they have a sense of community and connection, when they feel heard and known, when they feel safe enough to take risks (Lieber) In this safe space, couldn’t students’ imaginations thrive?

Arts + Advisory = ARTVISORY

Michael Armstrong What would a school look like if imagination were placed at its center? Curriculum should be non-prescriptive, open- ended, interdisciplinary A teacher should follow the imaginative lead of his students Assessment would come from documentation (analyzing, examining) Imaginative work needs a public space

Michael Armstrong “School is a place where values and knowledge are developed and exchanged” Students create the school culture Students should be able to participate in the development of knowledge Students should be able to participate in the construction of values

Artvisory Small groups of students would be assigned an “artvisor” Teachers, administrators, school staff would all be responsible for an artvisory Students would be able to decide** what artvisories study Artvisors would specifically address imagination Artvisories would produce and share imaginative work all over the school building and in the community, helping to shape culture

??? How much training/coaxing would artvisors need to feel comfortable and safe themselves? Would this impact school culture effectively? How could we ensure buy-in? From stakeholders? Students? In the age of assessment, does documentation fly at the HS level? Would I want to be an artvisor? Would You? Would I want to be an artvisee? You?
