Acyl-carnitine ? Author`s picture

 Carnitine takes over acyl group from HSCoA, forming macroerg O-esters, by special enzymes in a reversible reaction.  This is the only enzymatic reaction of carnitine in aniamal tissues.  Forming acyl-carnitine esters transiently, carnitine is an obligatory factor in transporting fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix.  The carnitine itself, the transferase enzymes and translocase (in mitochondrial mambrane) forms the carntine system.
