DANIEL 7

DANIEL 7:1-6 1st year of king Belshazzar Daniel has a vision DO NOT PRINT THIS SLIDE. INFORMATION IS REPEATED ON THE NEXT ONE 1. 1st year of king Belshazzar - Moved back in time before the fall of Babylon 552/551 BC. Text has switched back to Hebrew from Aramaic (chapters 2-6) 2. Daniel has a vision - Wrote it down and gives us the following summary:

DANIEL 7:1-6 1st year of king Belshazzar Daniel has a vision Dream environment Like a lion Resembled a bear Like a leopard 1. 1st year of king Belshazzar - Moved back in time before the fall of Babylon 552/551 BC. Text has switched back to Hebrew from Aramaic (chapters 2-6) 2. Daniel has a vision - Wrote it down and gives us the following summary: 3. Dream environment - Night, 4 winds of heaven stirring up the great sea 4. Like a lion Had the wings of an eagle (quick movement) Wings were plucked (disabled) Made to stand on 2 feet like man Given a human mind 5. resembled a bear Raised up on one side (ready to attack again) 3 ribs were in its mouth (victims of previous hunt) Told to “arise and devour much meat” . Not satisfied 6. Like a leopard On his back, 4 wings of a bird (very fast movement) 4 heads (looking in all directions for prey) Dominion was given to him

DANIEL 7:7-12 Terrible beast The horns of the beast Little horn “Ancient of Days” Judgment 1. Terrible beast (different from all the others) Dreadful, terrifying and extremely strong (v23 devour the whole earth) Large iron teeth; It devoured, trampled down with its feet. It had 10 horns 2. Little horn (11th horn); Tore out 3 horn by the roots Had eyes of a man & a mouth uttering great boasts Waging war on the saints (overpowering them) v21 3. “Ancient of Days” Thrones were cast down (set up), Rev 4:4 - 24 elders sat on thrones “Ancient of Days” took His seat; Old person, wise? (judge) Garment was white as snow (pure); hair on his head was like pure wool Throne was like the fiery flame, wheels of burning fire; River of fire Thousands upon thousands were serving Him, myriads stood before Him 4. Judgment - Court sat, books were opened (Phil 4:3, Rev 3:5 -Book of life) Little horn still boasted Judged in favor of the saints (v22), Beast’s body was destroyed and burned Rest of the beasts: Dominion removed, extension of life for an period of time Other kingdoms are left but are subject to the everlasting kingdom Most High is always the reigning king (in control)

DANIEL 7:13-14 With the clouds of heaven Presented to the “Ancient of Days” 1. With the clouds of heaven One like the son of man was coming (“like” - compare to beasts) Person had the form of a human (“adam” image of God) Ezk 2:1 - Ezekiel is call the “son of man” (offspring of humans) Mt 26:64; Mk 14:62 - Jesus quotes to Caiaphas the High Priest making application to Himself. 2. Presented to the “Ancient of Days” Given dominion, glory and a kingdom (everlasting), v18 saints receive it That all peoples, nations and language might serve Him Inadequacy of language in describing awesome non worldly sight

DANIEL 7:15-28 The interpretation Revelation ended 4 beasts Saints 4th beast 10 horns Little horn All kingdoms under heaven given to saints Revelation ended 1. The interpretation - Daniel still distressed; asks a bystander the meaning ● 4 beasts = 4 kings who will arise from the earth (kingdoms v24) ● Saints will receive the kingdom & possess it forever (ages to come) ● 4th beast = 4th kingdom, different from all others, devour & crush earth ● 10 horn = 10 kings from that kingdom (consecutive or simultaneous rule?) ● Little horn = King after 10 (different), Will subdue 3 of the 10 kings (simultaneous rule) ○ Blasphemy ○ Wear out the saints, persecution ○ New morality - alterations in times and law ○ Will win for a limited time - time, times, ½ time (x, 2x, ½x) His dominion will be taken away, destroyed forever In favor of the saints of the highest one 1 Cor 6:2 - Saints will judge the world ● All kingdoms under heaven given to saints Saints/holy ones - same word as applied to angelic watcher (Dan 4:17) Dominion & greatness given to the people of the saints of the highest one Or a grammatical change - “the people, the saints of the highest one” All dominions will serve and obey Him 2. Revelation ended - Alarmed Daniel (pale face), kept matter to himself

WHO ARE THEY? Babylon Roman Medo-Persian Greek Church Everlasting JER 49:19-22 DAN 4 Medo-Persian Greek Church Everlasting ○ What is the limiting factor (beginning and ending) in this vision? ○ Given: Ending limiting factor The everlasting kingdom ◘ 33 AD - Christ ascension into heaven & church established ◘ Christ established his kingdom under Roman Rule (Mat 27:64) ◘ Col 1:13-14 - We are in the Kingdom ◘ 1 Cor 15:24-28 - Christ will rule until death is abolished ○ Implied: Beginning limiting factor ◘ Lion, lord of the beasts - Nebuchadnezzar (606 BC) - King of kings (2:37) ◘ Wings plucked, stood like a man, given the mind of man: What separates Man from beast? Spirit; morality; understanding of a creator; worship Compare: Nebuchadnezzar who acknowledged God (Dan 4) VS beasts ◘ Jer 49:19-22 - Described as a lion and a eagle ● Reasonable deduction - What 4 kingdoms existed between Nebuchadnezzar and the church? Babylonian, Medo-Persian; Grecian; Roman ○ 2nd beast - Medo-Persian ○ 3rd beast - Greek - Alexander the Great’s kingdom was divided into four ○ 4th beast - Roman

DANIEL 2 Babylon (Dan 2:38) Roman Break/Crush Medo-Persian Divided Inferior Greek Church 33 AD (Col 1:13) Rule all earth Everlasting Similarities between Daniel 2 and 7 Review Chapter 2

Similarities between Daniel 2 and 7 ○ Visions occur during the Babylonian reign (2:1; 7:1) ○ Interpretation of images being 4 kingdoms (2:39, 40; 7:17,23) ○ Ending limited factor of the Everlasting kingdom (2:44; 7:27); end times ○ Beginning limited factor - Given (2:37); Implied (7:4) ○ Bookends the Aramaic section of the book - Common Hebrew Poetic writing ○ 3rd kingdom similarities - Rule over all the earth (2:39); Dominion (7:6) ○ 4th kingdom similarities ◘ Destruction Made of iron, would crush and break into pieces (2:40) Iron teeth, crushed & trampled (7:7) ◘ Division Divided kingdom (clay & iron) (2:41) 10 horns, little horn uprooting three of the ten (7:8)

QUESTIONS 1. In what ways is God specifically in control in this chapter? Daniel is allowed to see the vision, he is given the interpretation, God gives the son of man an everlasting kingdom and punishes the beasts.
