Project 6: Usability and Utility of a Network Visualization of Document Topics Initial Presentation Gill, Amandeep Singh Gulati, Vrishti Mesple, Eric Yang, Xinxin

OVERVIEW

TopicNets- Interactive Topic-based Data Exploration Visualization of topic clusters extracted from large documents through similarity analysis of text documents.

Features 1. Visualize result of text-based search 2. Temporal Layout 3. Topic-based Deformation 4. Customized scheme (colors, threshold, size)

USABILITY ISSUES

Usability Issue 1(Our View) The layout of user interface is not structured well.

Usability Issue 2 (Our View) No proper description of tabs and functionalities

Usability Issue 3 (Our View) Too much unwanted information simple mode for unprofessional users expert/full mode for advanced users

Methods and Approaches Finding a solution to our HCI problem

Phase 1 (week 4-5) Initial Interview Why? 1.Form user groups 2.Complexity of program 3.Scope of problem not clear 4.Questions abstract 5.Lots of information How? 1.Identify the objectives 2.Prepare sample questions. 3.Identify method to analyze. Sample Questions: What do you think of these types of programs? Interviewers: All

Phase 2 (week 5) Deciding Users Data collected from interviews: - prior knowledge - education - experience - frequency of use Help placement of users into subgroups. Formulate tasks for different subgroups. Example: based on the information, we can form 2 subgroups 1- undergraduate (3-5 users) 2- graduate and faculty (3-5 users)

Phase 3 (week 5-6) Deciding tasks for groups Everyone does simple mode(basic and intermediate tasks). Based upon results from initial interview, specific participants(experienced users) perform additional advanced tasks. Researchers Basic level task Eric Intermediate level task Amandeep Advanced level task Vrishti & Xinxin

Phase 4 (week 7) Pilot Test Prepare test environment Preliminary usability test Make sure the goals of our tests are met

Phase 5 (week 7-8) Implementing Test Test administration (Tutorials, scenario description, timelines) Video recording Screen recording Present task environment Tutorial (half an hour) Conduct experiment (half an hour for basic task, additional half an hour for advanced task)

Phase 6 (week 9-10) Analyzing Data & Provide Recommendations Analyze data based on the usability test. Proposed recommendations Dialogue with John Final report
