Sugar: worldwide influence Originated in Indonesia and New Guinea Spread to India by traders and travelers. Further spread west by Arab conquest and the Crusades, Prices in London were equivalent to $100 per pound in 1319.

The New World 1493: Columbus brings sugar to the Caribbean Sugar well-suited to tropical climate Explosive growth in cultivation Production accelerates the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Export agriculture engrained into economy and makes way for TNCs in the future.

Cutting the Grass: Not an Easy task Machete injuries are most common. Heat-related injuries. Noxious gasses produced by refining. Seasonal workers are particularly vulernable. Widespread environmental effects.
