Learning outcomes Understand what Business Intelligence (BI) means Associate terminology related to BI Gain insight to the many uses of BI in industry and government Be exposed to some demonstrations of BI systems that are available Gain an appreciation for what might be expected of a college graduate searching for a corporate job

Business Intelligence Systems refer to combinations of hardware, software, and communications connections used to analyze piles of available data and organize it to answer specific management questions.

IMPORTANT IDEAS Database is a structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer system so that a computer program or person using a query language can consult it to answer queries Data mart is a repository of data gathered from operational data and other sources that is designed to serve a particular community of knowledge workers Data warehouse is the main repository of an organization's historical data (databases), its corporate memory Data mining is the principle of sorting through large amounts of data and picking out relevant information. It is usually used by business intelligence organizations or systems OLAP (online analytical processing) is computer processing that enables a user to easily and selectively extract and view data from different points-of-view

IMPORTANT IDEAS EPM Enterprise Performance Management, BPM Business Performance Monitoring, CPM Corporate Performance Monitoring - are strategic approaches to improving business performance, in short represents the strategic deployment of business intelligence solutions OPM Operational Performance Management is a type of performance management that addresses the growing pressure to increase revenue while managing costs, meeting ever-evolving and expanding customer demands. Dashboard In information technology, a dashboard is a user interface that, somewhat resembling an automobile's dashboard, organizes and presents information in a way that is easy to read.

Government Uses The benefits alone of data sharing between local authorities and federal intelligence agencies could reduce crime levels as well as lower the risk of terrorist attacks. Census data collected every 10 years could be integrated with existing data from other organizations to provide the government with a clearer picture of whom they are representing. Many patrol cars have wireless computer systems for easy access of records to enhance the patrols efficiency in fighting crime and serving the public

Government and Business Intelligence Performance and Results Act (GPRA), the Clinger-Cohen Act and Office of Management and Budget mandates require agencies to track their performance against predefined goals, report the results to outside entities including Congress, and ensure that performance meets expectations.
