What’s up at SLAC Linear Collider R&D organization Tom Himel SLAC Linear Collider Consortium Organizational Meeting Cornell April 19, 2002

T. Himel 4/19/02 Linear Collider Detector (LCD) study group Weekly 1 hour meeting to discuss various physics and detector topics. Has been ongoing for several years. Speaker phone conference call with presentations on web. Organized by John Jaros and Norman Graf has new and old agendas and presentations and call in instructions.

T. Himel 4/19/02 LCD study group previous topics Tom Himel: Report on the Fermilab R&D Opportunities Meeting Michael Peskin: Supersymmetry Studies at Linear Colliders Tim Barklow: Status Report from Subgroup on Physics Above 500 GeV Rainer Pitthan: Making Polarized Positrons from Polarized Gammas Toshi Abe: GEANT4 Applications for Future LCD Studies Wei Ming Yao: Status of Higgs Self Coupling Analysis Hartmut Sadrozinski: Si Strip Detectors at the SSC, LHC, and in Space: Lessons Learned Takashi Maruyama: GEANT Simulated Backgrounds in NLC BDS Tom Markiewicz: What the IR Group Needs from the Detector Group Tim Barklow: e+e- Physics Above 500 GeV - Quantifying the Advantage of High Energy

T. Himel 4/19/02 Simulation Tools Norman Graf has been leading a team developing simulation tools. Easy to use (documented!!) GEANT4 MC Simple detector definition (w/o using C++) Fast MC in common use Tracking and clustering algorithms still need work. Can get involved either using or developing this MC.

T. Himel 4/19/02 IP Beam Instrumentation Study First meeting will be June 26 at SLAC. focusing on 3 topics: Luminosity (Cinabro from Cornell coordinating), Energy (Torrence from Oregon coordinating), Polarization (Woods from SLAC coordinating).

T. Himel 4/19/02 THE LIST of accelerator R&D projects Input from SLAC, FNAL, Cornell. I just organized it. Rubin’s, Padamsee’s and Roger’s projects (in following talks) are on it. Wide range of skills, project sizes and priorities. Something suitable for everyone.

T. Himel 4/19/02 Sample DB entry ID: 16 Priority: Medium project_size: Large skill_type: physicist short project description: superconducting quadrupole vibration test Detailed project description: There are two options for the final doublet magnets: permanent and superconducting. The main concern about the superconducting method is that coils will vibrate too much since a strong support to the cryostat would cause a big heat leak, and boiling helium may jiggle the coils. Either by calculation, or finding an appropriate magnet, convince people that the quadrupole fields center will move by less than a nm relative to the outside of the cryostat. Needed by who: NLC and TESLA present status: good idea needed Needed by date: 6/1/2005 ContactPerson1: Joe Frisch WorkPhone1: Address1: Note that the contact person is someone who knows more about the project. He’s not the person who will arrange who works on what.

T. Himel 4/19/02 Planning a meeting at SLAC Probably will be May 31. Trying to figure out how we can be a progression from the two meetings which have already happened rather than just a repeat for a different set of people. Any ideas?

T. Himel 4/19/02 Summary Lots of challenging, fun, useful R&D projects to do. SLAC, FNAL, and Cornell all are facilitating university's R&D efforts. The coordination to coordinate these coordination efforts is not yet coordinated.. This meeting is coordinating an NSF consortium. DOE would like us to do the same. The LC steering committee (with the 3 directors) which is about to be formed may handle overall coordination. What about international coordination? Let’s get to work!!
