Nov. 7 report (2 nd Nov. 7 of today) Hawaii/Marc

Here are some examples of the new supplies I will bring to IHEP next week: 1.Alcohol pump bottles (2). 2.Kim Wipes, lab grade cleaning paper (4 or 5 boxes). 3.Needle nose pliers (with yellow handles, are already in my tool IHEP). 4.New roll of Silicone foam tape (10M). ALL OF THESE ITEMS ARE ALREADY PACKED!

Totally, we have cleaned 21 bundles. During the cleaning, we found that: 1. Fiber 42-D’s cap is stuck. We can not even see the white plastic tube. Liu Qian: you did an excellent job of recovering from this problem. Congratulations! If you find more caps that are tight, first squeeze the black sleeve (see arrow) with the needle nose pliers, try to remove the cap, while squeezing with the pliers. The proper glue for putting the white ceramic ferrule back into the black plastic sleeve is the fast drying thin glue in the small tube that you showed me. (We call is Super Glue. Only use a small drop, too much is not good.) Anyway this fiber won’t be installed, I’ll use an extra fiber instead: Following a proper repair, like this, it is OK to use the fiber as long as the follow-up LED test shows acceptable results. Try to keep this thin glue from touching the fiber.

2. There are some glue on some fibers’ head. We have to clean these fibers again. (I tried to take some picture from the microscope, but I failed. So no picture is shown) If you see some “cratering” on the tip of the fiber from epoxy that was not completely polished off (as we did last week), don’t worry about it. This epoxy is optically transmissive. An abrasive compound would be required to remove this epoxy. Our Hawaii timing/transmissiviity measurements were made with this epoxy as it is. Thus: It’s OK.

Summary: We look forward to reading your 11/08/07 summary in our morning news, and I look forward to becoming one of your team members. Marc
