Celebration of Dr. Lester Skaggs’ 90 th Birthday The University of Chicago Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology and Graduate Program in Medical Physics November 14, 2001

Lester Skaggs and his younger brother on the farm in Northern Missouri. (Circa 1915). Lester Skaggs (Circa 1933).

Dr. Skaggs (first on left) received his Ph.D. in Physics from the U of C in 1939.

Construction of the ACRH was completed in It was funded by an act of Congress following World War II for the medical uses of atomic particles.

The 2000 Ci Co-60 therapy unit designed by Drs. Skaggs and Lanzl was the first isocentric Cobalt machine in the US. Dr. Lanzl is seen with an isodose plotting machine.

The Van de Graaff produced 2 MeV x-rays that could be aimed at any angle. Here a patient is shown receiving radiation with a horizontal beam as seen through the lead glass observation window.

View of the high voltage cage, the Klystrons, wave guides and the 16 ft. long accelerating tube.

The massive rotating gantry.

View of the Lineac treatment room. Dr. Lanzl is controlling the gantry.

The control panels of the Lineac. Routine operation required both a physics and a therapy technician.

Dr. Skaggs in front of the King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia.

Dr. Skaggs marching at the U of Chicago Centennial celebration in 1992.
