S ENSORY A NALYSIS

I AM THINKING OF A FOOD ……

I THINK THE FOOD TASTES YUMMY …..

W HAT DO YOU THINK IT IS ?

I T IS IMPORTANT TO USE DESCRIBING WORDS WHEN DESCRIBING WORDS. No: Yum Yuck Delicious Nice Amazing Horrible These words are your opinion but they do not describe the food.

T HE FOOD IS ORANGE …

I T IS ROUND …

I T IS FIRM ON THE OUTSIDE AND SOFT IN THE MIDDLE …

W HAT FOOD AM I THINKING OF ?

A N ORANGE !

T HERE ARE FOUR SENSES WE USE TO DESCRIBE FOOD : Taste Texture Aroma Appearance

T ASTE What does the food taste like when in your mouth? Bitter Bland Burnt Fatty Fishy Greasy Meaty

T EXTURE What does the food feel like? In your hand/mouth? Lumpy Moist Rough Runny Sloppy

A ROMA What does the food smell like? Spicy Strong Sweet Tangy Fatty

A PPEARANCE What does the food look like? It is important to think about the shape and colour when describing appearance. Dull Flat High Opaque Shiny

A CTIVITY In pairs Think of one food each Take turns to use describing words to describe the food to each other First person that guesses the others food, wins!

S ENSORY PROPERTIES AND COOKING ?? It is important to not only learn to use words to describe foods but to understand why foods may taste/appear/ smell that way because of how you cooked it. Think of the different in texture of uncooked to cooked pasta? The pasta is firm and hard until you cook it and it absorbs the water and becomes soft and squishy.

S ENTENCE AND PARAGRAPH WRITING You need to learn not only to describe foods using describing words but to use these words to develop paragraphs. From a Year 7 example: Our omelette tasted light, cheesy and healthy. The tomato in it made the omelette taste sweet. Our omelette looked light, fluffy and golden. our omelette felt lighter than it would if we made a classic omelette. It was also smooth and soft.

A CTIVITY You will be provided with a range of foods. On the worksheet find two words to describe each sense of each food. Then using those words create a sentence/paragraph to describe the food. You will find the sensory chart on the weebly to help you.
