Tsunamis By Sienna Sayle

How are they caused? A tsunami is often caused by an extremely powerful earthquake under the ocean floor. This earthquake pushes a large volume of water to the surface creating waves. In the deep ocean the waves are small. As they approach the coast they get bigger and more dangerous. Tsunamis often cause lots of damage and many people die in tsunamis. Tsunamis can be caused by volcanic eruption or landslides.

Staying Safe You must always go to high ground if you see an Tsunami You must warn others who do not know, you could save many lives. Tilly Smith once saw a tsunami and with her knowledge of tsunamis she saved over one hundred lives

Where are you? Are you safe and is your family safe?

Funky Facts The definition of tsunami is a Japanese word that means harbour wave. A tsunami can be so small that they almost are not noticed however, some waves can be recorded at measuring extreme heights of up to 38 meters high.

Types of Tsunamis There are three different types of tsunamis known s the Immediate Waves, Seismic Seiches, Classical Waves. Immediate Waves This type of tsunami is created by sudden lateral moves. The water is pushed and moves upwards. This wave then collapses outwards in both directions, forming an almost instant response the ground movement. These wave are very high although the in the ocean they are tiny waves you do not notice. Seismic Seiches The Seismic Seiches is caused by variations in the local tilting effects. These waves are called seismic seiches because the response of the water is dependent on its properties and will take the form of waves growing big to them become a tsunami. Classical Waves These waves are caused from the deep open ocean and these are normally able to be recognized by special computers. Scientists often go to the laptops to check the ocean waves incase of a tsunami to warn people after a volcanic eruption or earthquake.

Interesting Information Tsunami are known as killer waves. They often are noticed when the tide goes out a couple of meters and then minutes later shooting forward, then massive waves occur and smash down onto the ground drowning many young and old. The pacific is known as the most active tsunami area on this planet. The worst tsunami ever recorded was in Indian ocean 2004.

QUIZ What is the highest height recorded of a tsunami wave? What does the word tsunami mean in Japanese? What is the most active tsunami area? Where was the worst tsunami ever? Are waves huge in the deep ocean? 38 meters Harbour wave Pacific ocean The Indian ocean 2004 No
