Acute Hepatitis B : 2011 Case Definition HEPATITIS B : EPIDEMIOLOGY Acute Hepatitis B : 2011 Case Definition Clinical Case Definition An acute illness with: (a) discrete onset of symptoms and (b) jaundice or elevated serum ALT (> 200 IU/L) Laboratory Criteria for Diagnosis (a) IgM antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) positive or Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive and
(b) IgM anti-HAV negative (if done) Case Classification Confirmed: a case that meets the clinical case definition, is laboratory confirmed, and is not know to have chronic hepatitis B

Chronic Hepatitis B : 2011 Case Definition HEPATITIS B : EPIDEMIOLOGY Chronic Hepatitis B : 2011 Case Definition Clinical Evidence No symptoms are required. Persons with chronic HBV infection may have no evidence of liver disease or may have a spectrum of disease ranging from chronic hepatitis to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Laboratory Criteria for Diagnosis IgM antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (IgM anti-HBc) negative AND a positive result on one of the following tests: hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), or hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA OR HBsAg positive or HBV DNA positive or HBeAg positive two times at least 6 months apart (Any combination of these tests performed 6 months apart is acceptable Case Classification Confirmed: a case that meets either of the above laboratory criteria for diagnosis Probable: a person with a single HBsAg positive or HBV DNA positive or HBeAg positive lab result and does not meet the case definition for acute hepatitis B. HEPATITIS B : EPIDEMIOLOGY Patients with Acute Hepatitis B who Report Selected Epidemiologic Characteristics, by age group, U.S. 2007 The percentage of cases for which a specific risk factor was reported was calculated on the basis of the total number of cases for which any information for that exposure was reported. Percentages might not total 100% because multiple risk factors might have been reported for a single case. The epidemiologic characteristic (risk factor) was determined for exposures that occurred during the 6 weeks-6 months before the onset of illness. Among males, 18% reported homosexual activity. *The percentage of cases for which a specific risk factor was reported was calculated on the basis of the total number of cases for which any information for that exposure was reported.
