JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 2 California P-16 Council Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI), announced plans to form CA P-16 Council (Dec 2004) –First California P-16 Council meeting (May 2005) California P-16 Council is statewide assembly of 47 members with diverse representation (Current member list available at –Educators from preschool – college –Parents –Students –Librarians –Elected officials –Business leaders –Community leaders

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction 15 Closing the Achievement Gap Yet, an achievement gap exists between our white students and students of color, as well as gaps with our English learners, poor students, and students with disabilities. In California, the achievement gap represents a majority of students. Closing the gap will improve the lives and futures of our students and secure the future for our state. Closing the gap represents a moral imperative as well as an economic imperative.
