Great Britain

It is made up of four different countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland,Wales. The Prime Minister is Gordon Brown, and he is from the Labour Party. There are 61,113,205 people living in the United Kingdom. The capital city is London. The main religion is Anglican Christianity, but in the United Kingdom there are 1,635,500 Muslims, 270,000 Jews, 560,000 Hindus and 340,000 Sikhs. It has a very multicultural society.

The Royal Family The Reining Monarch in Great Britain is Queen Elizabeth II. She has reigned since 1952 for over 57 years. She is married to Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, and they have four children. Their eldest child Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, is the Heir to the Throne. Prince William and Prince Harry are the sons of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in William and Harry are often in the newspapers because they go out to clubs a lot.

The patron saint of Scotland is Saint Andrew The Scottish people are famous for eating Haggis, which is a sheep's heart, liver and lungs mixed with onions and spice and cooked in the sheep's stomach. The national emblem is a thistle.

Northern Ireland Northern Ireland is separate from the Republic of Ireland due to political and religious differences. The population is about 1.5 million in Northern Ireland. The patron saint of Ireland is Saint Patrick The typical drink from Ireland is Guinness, which is a black ale. The two areas separated in The national emblem of Ireland is the Shamrock, and it is said to bring good luck.

London London is the Capital of England and of Great Britain. London has a population of 7,556,900. The river which runs through the city is the Thames. The Tube (or Underground) and London Buses are very important. Some of the most famous landmarks are Tower Bridge, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, The Gherkin, The London Eye Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and 10 Downing street (where the Prime Minister lives)
