University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) The GeoWall Originally designed & developed by EVL in installed among members of the GeoWall Consortium for Research & Education in the Geosciences ( Integration into Univ. Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Arizona State undergrad Geoscience curriculum- ~3100 students per semester. Deployment at SciTech Museum in Aurora, Illinois; Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) WiggleView : GeoWall Visualization of Seismic Events (Scripps & IRIS Consortium) Anticipating Earthscope’s USArray transportable seismometers; focused; 3.Augmentation of USGS’ national seismic network. WiggleView is software for the GeoWall for visualizing both real time data and recorded data in novel ways (Seismoglyph).

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) GeoWall Hardware-assisted Voxel Visualization Develop parallel, hardware-assisted volume rendering techniques for the GeoWall and tiled displays. Worthwhile to experiment with ISI’s particle-based volume visualization. Junction and boundary of 2 cells (NCMIR) Data from eXperimental EarthScape basin “Jurassic Tank”

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) TeraVision : High Resolution Graphics Distribution VGA / DVI capture GigE Remote Display Like a Powerpoint projector with a Gigabit NIC built into it. Capture raw 1024x768 30fps 500Mbps uncompressed stream Next generation version will let us capture twice the resolution.

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Gang TeraVision boxes to stream a tiled display OptIPuter Computing / Data Resource High resolution parallel rendering on high performance Visualization cluster at StarLight multicast

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) TeraScope: Large Scale Data Summarization and Visualization EVL and Laboratory for Advanced Computing’s Project Data Store. The TeraClick! Provide the illusion that you are clicking on a terabyte data file. Tap into research on creating visual summaries and frame it in the OptIPuter context. Explore ways to optimize intelligent data prefetching to hide latency by taking advantage of extra bandwidth (LambdaRAM).

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) JuxtaView : Extremely High Resolution Digital Montage Visualization Large digital montage viewer for tiled LCD displays (PerspecTile). View high resolution montages from NCMIR, Scripps, USGS. Example: In a Homeland Security / Emergency Response Application, USGS has aerial photos of 133 urban areas: 5643 tiles each 5000x5000 pixel resolution ~ 375,600x375,600 pixels for each urban area (394GB per area.) Total data ~ 51 TB Bathymetry data of the whole world (Scripps) Large scale brain maps of protein expression in rats. (NCMIR)

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) GeoPad : Wireless Field Geology UIC, Univ. Michigan, Univ. Minnesota, USGS All geoscience majors go in the field. Experience in the field is considered a cornerstone of earth science. All geologists generally do fieldwork and mapping of some kind. Visualization while running GIS is key to teaching good mapping skills. Want to have libraries of GIS layers, Remote sensing and scanned maps in the field to help make decisions on the spot. We want to show position using a GPS on existing maps and draw directly on the maps. This gives us better ground truth. With a smaller computer we can carry more rocks. With wireless we can send positions and mapping data back to a central source or even to other mapping parties to do distributed collaborative mapping. Also access to the OptIPuter from home base.
