WP1: Physics Studies General Strategy P.2 The Document Structure P.3-6 LCFI Physics Meeting 25/11/04 LCFI Proposal Dave Jackson

General Strategy Statement of goals of physics studies followed by required Tools and Plans ‘Forward looking’ – extrapolation from current status. in order to set Milestones need to be also: ‘Backward looking’ (from future) – when are various constraints likely to be fixed ? such as: 1) beampipe radius for machine 2) begin VXD construction

The Document Structure 1) Purpose: dependence of the LC physics on: beam pipe radius number and arrangement of detector layers Material budget; including beam pipe, support structures, small angle region, etc. Secondary: Reconstruction issues Machine backgrounds (related to beam-pipe radius) Effect of cluster finding algorithms track finding / pattern recognition Primary: Vertex detector design

2) Tools required a)Physics generator b)Detector simulation c)Vertex reconstruction/analysis code Describe status of c) based on SGV environment; jet flavour tagging, vertex charge reconstruction For b) plans/need to transfer tools to OO environment – with a continuation of current neural network studies. This also relates to International Collaboration

3) Physics channels Higgs branching fractions Higgs self-coupling SUSY/Higgs asymmetries Other new physics The ‘unexpected’ ‘Benchmark processes’

4) Domestic/International Collaboration Domestic: Part of LCUK, e.g. Calorimeter also needs physics studies International: Europe (DESY, Vienna, Nijmegen…) USA (SLAC, JAS3) Japan (KEK)
