Geography Rolling hills and raging rivers help make this country a beautiful republic. The green meadows and plentiful trees create a deep green color which gave this country the nickname the Emerald Isle. A warm climate with gentle rains and warm winds contribute to the greenness. A lot of the world’s peat is found in the bogs of this country.

The People Many of the people of this country trace their ancestry to the Celts. The main languages here are English and Gaelic. The Gaelic language has almost died out. About 57% of the people live in cities and towns. The population is 3.7 million. The children like to play soccer and hurling, a game like field hockey.

Economy Farming is good because of the rainy climate and fertile soil. The main food crop is potatoes. Industry is also a developing here. The economy mostly depends on the manufacture of machinery and transportation equipment.

History From 1100 t the British governed this country. This country gained its independence from the United Kingdom in There has been a lot of fighting about whether this country should be Catholic or Protestant. In 1990, the people elected their first female president.
