What is Hacker Radio?

Is the spreading of information, awareness and ideas. It provides a forum of discussion about the topics that we face in the technological world of today. Hacker Radio is audio, usually distributed over the Internet or radio. Hacker Radio:

Ham and shortwave radio Bulletin Boards Websites Mailing lists News servers E-Zines, textfiles, magazines and printed materials Forums and news sites Where did it all start?

Hackers, in general like to spread information and awareness Hackers are one of the first to discover important subjects such as how technology affects our lives and our future Hackers help to develop important survival techniques within our technological society Hackers develop innovation through existing technologies or by creating new ones Why do hackers cover this type of information?

The world of hacking The world of phone phreaking Discussion of social and legal issues that have to do with the impact of technology on our world Discussion of new technologies Discussion of technical companies and the impact that corporate politics can have Enlightening and educational topics having anything to do with technology and process What are some of the topics Hacker Radio covers?

Why not the news media to cover such topics?

What type of content will you have in your show? How often are you going to do your show? Is your show going to be live or pre-recorded? How are you going to spread the word about your show? Will your show have capabilities such as call ins, listener , live IRC chat, telephone conferences, etc. Things to consider in Hacker Radio

What recording equipment do we use? What software do we use to record the audio? What audio format will the show be in? How will the show be distributed? The technicalities of the show

The most common way to record is to use your computer’s sound card microphone and speaker phone More advanced recording can be done with a mixer, multiple microphones, head phone amp with headphones for all the show guests and a CD player or other device for background music and effects You can also record yourself and guests by recording the audio from your VOIP calls on your computer or by making a phone call with your modem If your lucky you can actually use a radio studio to do your show What recording equipment do we use?

Support Open Source and use Open Source audio programs What software do we use to record the audio?

ReZound aims to be a stable, open source, and graphical audio file editor primarily for but not limited to the Linux operating system. Tip: Follow these steps to save your audio to 16Kbps MP3 format File > Save as Check “Use LAME options” type -h -mm -b 16 --resample 16

Audacity is a free audio editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Echo, Change Tempo, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST and LADSPA plug-in effects.

The most popular audio format is MP3. MP3 is not an open standard Ogg Vorbis - Ogg Vorbis is a completely open, patent-free, professional audio encoding and streaming technology with all the benefits of Open Source What audio format will the show be in?

Archived files of shows on the web Live streams of your show Distributed media server and other media outlets How will the show be distributed? Hackermedia.net

In The Now Radio Freek America Binary Revolution Default Radio Daily Default Off The Hook Uberleeto DTMF Some of the shows that are out there now

Hacker Video Documentaries Shows What's else is out there? Hack T.V. The Broken Doug T.V. Whitesword T.V.

Take your own initiative on issues and educating others in your daily life Support groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation or develop a group for your cause Participate in local events and groups Exercise your own intelligence throughout your life What are other methods to spread awareness?

The idea is to be aware of the ever changing world we live in and the problems that may occur if technology is abused If you feel like you want to participate in something like Hacker Radio, I hope my presentation has given you some ideas on how you can make that happen What would I like you to walk away with from this talk?
