David Beckham made his England debut on the 1st September 1996 at the age of 21. He has played for Manchester United FC, Real Madrid, Milan AC and Los Angeles Galaxy. In May 2013,after having played for Paris Saint Germain, he decided to retire from football. His position is midfielder, his number is 23, and he previously was number 7. He was the captain of the English national squad. He has 115 caps playing for England. He is also considered a big international celebrity.

Football stadiums: Old Trafford Old Trafford is the home of Manchester United. It is the second largest stadium in England after Wembley. Its nickname is Theatre of Dreams. In 1958, a plane carrying the team back from Belgrade, crashed in Munich. Six players died. To commemorate this air disaster, there is a clock in the building stopped at the time of the tragedy.

Football Hooliganism The word ‘hooligan’ began to be associated with violence in football in particular in the 1980s in the UK. This is also known as ‘the English Disease’ Fights between supporters of rival teams took place before of after football matches. In some cases supporters or policemen have been killed. FIFA and UEFA have fought against hooliganism and have promoted a zero tolerance with respect to violence in football.

Songs and Anthems Football supporters usually sing songs to cheer their teams up, tunes such as ‘Vindaloo’, ‘Three Lions’ or ‘Torres, Liverpool’s number 9’. Besides, the clubs have anthems. The most famous one is ‘You’ll never Walk Alone’, which is the anthem for Liverpool F.C. and Celtic F.C. The song's most successful recording was released in 1963 by the Liverpudlian Merseybeat group Gerry and the Pacemakers.
