How Many Pounds of Trash Do We Collect in One Week? BY MAKENZIE AND MICHAEL

Purpose The reason we are doing this is to see how many pounds of trash we collect in one week. Then we will see how much we can recycle to reduce waste.

Hypothesis We think that we will have 50 pounds of trash. Why? Everything we buy has packaging that you have to throw away and waste.

Materials 1. Walmart Bags (10) 2. Scale (1) 3. Trash we usually throw away each day.

Procedure 1. We collect bags for the trash we collect each week. 2. We collect trash and put it in the bags instead of throwing it away. 3. When we weigh the trash in a week on a scale. 4. We add up the pounds of trash to see if our hypothesis was correct. 5. We then sorted out the trash into items we can recycle: paper, glass, cardboard, metal, and landfill items 6. We weighed the landfill trash

Results Our results were 11.9 pounds so our hypothesis was wrong. We recycled plastic, cardboard, glass, metal, paper, and tin. We recycled more than we had trash. Our final weight in trash was less than a pound.

Data

Conclusion  Our hypothesis was wrong we said it was going to be 50 pounds but it was 11.9 pounds. We also realized that most of our trash we normally would just throw away could be recycled. After recycling the plastic, metal, cardboard, paper, and glass, we were left with just a few wrappers.

Acknowledgements  We would like to thank our partners, Mrs. Larsen, Miss Otto, and the people that encouraged us to do our best, our class room, and Mrs. Reader the person that asked our science teacher to do a science fair.
