Learning Objectives: Students will be able to interpret information from a variety of sources and make connections to their topic of winter shelters. Students will be able to present research findings logically, and in a clear and concise presentation, using appropriate eye contact, volume and pronunciation. Students will be able to identify the main ideas of text pertaining to winter shelters. Students will be able to follow a multi-step procedure for constructing a winter shelter. Students will be able to describe the impact a shelter has on the daily life of humans. Students will be able to design a winter shelter, and make adjustments as needed, in order to build the warmest winter shelter.

Standards: MN & Common Core-Speaking, Viewing, Listening and Media Literacy Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study Present claims and findings, respect intellectual properties, sequence ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. MN & Common Core- Literacy in Science Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; provide an accurate summary of the text distinct from prior knowledge or opinions Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, designing solutions, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks. MN Science Standards Identify a common engineered system and evaluate its impact on the daily life of humans Apply and document an engineering design process that includes identifying criteria and constraints, making representations, testing and evaluation, and refining the design as needed to construct a product or system that solves a problem.

Eskimos’ Shelter: the Igloo Purpose for listening: Why were these shelters constructed? What did you learn about igloos after viewing this video? guardian.co.uk

Native American Shelters Purpose for listening: Why were the Native Americans so particular about shelter placement?

Basic Winter Shelters shelter/ shelter/ What are some examples of basic, winter shelters?

Group Research Assignment Each group will be assigned a winter shelter. Each group must conduct online research – When is this shelter used? – Where is the shelter used? – Why is the shelter used? – What materials are needed? – What is the procedure for building this shelter?

Oral Presentation Each group will present their research findings to the class. The presentation must include a demonstration of how to construct the shelter, using model-sized props. A song, rap, or rhyme must be included in the presentation- specifically addressing the procedure for building the shelter.

Grading Rubrics will be used for – Collaborative work – Oral presentation – Listening
