A Lesson For Older Christians
Presentation transcript:

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: “Sound” is from ὑ γιαινούσ ῃ (hygiainousē) whose root is “hygiene”.

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: Preaching what is in “good health” and “uncorrupted.”

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine : Doctrine = properly applied teaching.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; Literally to be sober and not allow wine or any alcohol in their lives.

We clarified that the use of wine in the Bible was for disinfecting water; like our modern chlorine. If you drank water without some wine in it you risked dysentery, cholera, e-coli, microsporidiosis, hepatitis or literally dozens of other diseases from bacteria, viruses, protozoans and parasites. These diseases were often fatal. Even today the WHO says water borne diseases are still the world’s leading killer (VOA News WHO)

Wine was always mixed with water… normally 3 or 4 parts water to one part wine. This was done to disinfect and make the water safe to drink.

Wine without water was considered barbarian… or totally uncivilized or “unchristian”.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

Reverent- Reverent- not “double tongued” but respectful in speech… the words of my mouth.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

Temperate- Temperate- inner outlook that regulates outward behavior… positive outlook of faith… the meditation of your heart…

Let the words (reverence) of my mouth and the meditation (temperance) of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

Sound… again “hygiene” good healthy uncorrupted.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; Faith- The root word means “persuaded.” You have an unswerving, thoroughly convinced confidence in God resulting in faithfulness.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

In love- In love- Sound in love ἀ γάπη (agapē) = Unconditional love that centers on moral preference.

2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;

Patience- Patience- Sound in patience ὑ πομον ῇ (hypomonē) Remaining under Being steadfast

James 1:3-4 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Linking love and patience… “The possibility of losing heart is contemplated; which would result in something being lacking.” Linking love and patience… “The possibility of losing heart is contemplated; which would result in something being lacking.” The expositors Greek Testament Vo. 4, pg 423 W. Robertson Nicoll. 1897

Faith builds patience by trusting in God for what you need and pray for. Faith builds patience by trusting in God for what you need and pray for. Love builds patience by reminding you God loves you and is caring for you. Love builds patience by reminding you God loves you and is caring for you. Patience builds faith and love by calling you back to faith to trust God and love in relationship with Him. Patience builds faith and love by calling you back to faith to trust God and love in relationship with Him.

So LET patience do the work of calling you to faith and being loved

“Let” is in PRESENT TENSE = This indicates continuous action in the present time (all week long). “Let” is in PRESENT TENSE = This indicates continuous action in the present time (all week long). “Let” is in IMPERATIVE MOOD = This is a command! You need to choose and get tough. “Let” is in IMPERATIVE MOOD = This is a command!
