Herding Sheep John 10:1-6 Shepherds, Thieves, and Sheepfolds The Shepherd and His Sheep Hearing the Call

 Psalm 100:3  Isaiah 40:11  Mark 6:34  Mark 14:27  Hebrews 13:20  1 Peter 5:4 Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

Shepherds, Thieves, and Sheepfolds  The context of the story  No transitional words, so it is connected to chapter 9  Not necessarily spoken on the same occasion  Jesus is referring here to the incident of the blind man  Therefore, the thieves and robbers refer to the false shepherds of Israel (Pharisees) and the sheepfold represents Judaism  The ones who hear Christ’s call and respond are His own in Israel of whom the blind man is an example Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

Shepherds, Thieves, and Sheepfolds  Two kinds of sheepfolds in chapter The kind found in the countryside  Circle of rocks or brush with opening  Shepherd would lie across the opening 2. The kind found in the town or village  Literal enclosure with a literal gate  Many shepherds would put their sheep in the care of a porter  Next day, each shepherd would call his sheep by name Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

Shepherds, Thieves, and Sheepfolds  The Shepherd is Jesus  The Sheepfold here is Judaism  The Thieves are the false teachers of Israel  The Porter is God  This gives meaning to verse 16 Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

The Shepherd and His Sheep  Lesson 1 – Jesus knows His sheep  Implied in verse 3  Stated in verse 14  Given by the Father in verse 29  See Romans 5:6-8 Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

The Shepherd and His Sheep  Lesson 2 – Jesus calls His sheep, by name; verse 3  God draws us – John 6:44  God grants us understanding – John 6:65; Matthew 13:11  God seeks His sheep – John 1:43  God calls His sheep – John 10:3; Matthew 9:9; Luke 19:5,6  God’s sheep know His voice – John 20:16  Romans 8:28,2 9 Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

The Shepherd and His Sheep  Lesson 3 – Jesus, having known His sheep and called them, leads them out – verse 3  Jesus leads them to His own flock – the Church  Jesus leads them to green pastures and eternal life  Jesus leads them from the world, sin, and Satan Herding Sheep John 10:1-6

Hearing the Call Have you heard Jesus call your name? Have you responded to that call? Do you recognize this call as one you have been waiting for all your life? If you have not responded, you need to do so quickly! Herding Sheep John 10:1-6
